What a great experience! How could I have not taken advantage of this years ago?! This place exists only a few miles outside of the town in which I grew up!

The day before school started I e-mailed one of the Spanish teachers at my university to see if it would be possible to audit her class. I am unable to take this class for credit due to the fact that I have a very demanding semester of nursing courses that conflict with some of the class times that are required for the Spanish class. One day after class she suggested that I come out to the Concordia Language Villages just outside of my hometown and meet with some people. I had known about Concordia Language Villages and about how they are very well known across the country for a full language immersion in many languages while staying in the United States. However, this was the first time that I have had the opportunity to experience this first hand.

What a great experience! How could I have not taken advantage of this years ago?! This place exists only a few miles outside of the town in which I grew up! Because it is winter, right now they do not currently have any students but they had a meeting called la mesa de Espanol that included some of the workers and others from the community to talk solely in Spanish. When I arrived I did not know what to expect. I was very warmly greeted by many of the people there and was not given a chance to speak in English at all! Although overwhelming at first, due to the fact that I have not taken a Spanish class in almost two years, I quickly became comfortable and began conversing with them. I ended up staying for almost three hours and was trying to absorb everything that I possibly could and understood everything for the most part, which I was surprised. The people there were very welcoming which made it easy for me to talk with them even if my grammar was not always correct.

Toward the end of dinner one of the directors spoke to me about job opportunities out there on the weekends in preparation for my trip to Mexico. I was blown away! This was absolutely perfect for me! Living in rural Minnesota, cultural diversity is definitely much narrower than other areas of the country especially the Hispanic population. This has been a great barrier for me to learn Spanish in the past and I have found that textbooks can only take you so far before you really need to immerse yourself in the language to learn it. I feel very blessed to have these doors open up for me to learn and practice my Spanish before I leave for Mexico. My focus now is really to make sure that I also maintain concentration on my nursing classes as well as developing my Spanish speaking ability. I am still not quite back into the swing of things after winter break but I am very excited for this semester and what is to follow!!!
