Erin's adventures in Ghana

Many people have asked how they call follow my experience in Ghana. I'm hoping this blog will be a good way for everyone to read about my journey.

Almost that time :)

Wow! It's here! It's time to leave for Ghana. I can't even describe the emotions that I'm feeling right now. I decided that I'm going to try to stay up all night so that I can sleep the majority of my trip tomorrow.

I will be leaving from Boise around 10AM, from there I will be headed to Portland. I have a 2 hour layover and will be able to see my best friend, Ryan, for lunch. From there I had to Amsterdam. I wish I was traveling with someone because I would love to get out of the airport and do a little exploring. I have a 6 hour layover so hopefully I'll find something to keep myself occupied. I arrive in Accra, Ghana at 8:00PM on Friday night. That is 2PM Idaho time. I'm stocked up on Ambien so hopefully that will help me sleep a little. My trip time is about 36 hours...holy moly!

I finished up packing today and still feel like I'm forgetting something! I tried to limit everything to one suitcase because I was warned that it was extremely difficult to haul arround luggage once I arrive in Ghana. I ended up having to take two suitcases. The second one is just a small carry on bag that I will be leaving in Ghana. It is filled with donations for the children. I had a great friend donate 70 children's dresses. I also had donations of some school supplies and a few fun little things for the kids. I (and the children I will be working with) would gladly accept care packages with more supplies and fun things for them.

I'm still in shock that I'm leaving tomorrow. It definitely hasn't hit me. I've stayed so busy getting ready that I haven't really stopped to think about what I'm about to do. It hit me for the first time when I pulled into my apartment and saw my mom waiting for me to load up the car. I had to say goodbye to my roommate and move the rest of my stuff out. I think the hardest part today was saying goodbye to my kitty. If you know me, you know how much I love Easton. He will be staying with my mom for the next 2 and a half months. I'm sure he will be completely spoiled and probably wont want to come home to me :)

My phone, email and facebook have been blowing up with warm wishes today. I feel completely overwhelmed with the love and support that I've received. It is also important to mention how extremely financially gracious people have been. I can't even describe what it means to me to have so many people standing behind me during this journey. I am completely spoiled by those in my life. So so blessed! I hope that I can make everyone proud while I'm in Ghana.

I am so excited to begin this journey. I can't even begin to imagine what it's going to be like! I know that it's going to be hard at times, that I'm going to struggle and that I am going to grow SO much. I can't wait :)

Thank you again to everyone who has contributed to this trip. Can't wait to share it all with those I love :)

I will be shutting off my phone tomorrow morning. I will be getting a phone once I get to Ghana but will only be using it to contact my family.

I will have internet and will be able to update my blog occasionaly. I will also be checking my email (erincraig@u.boisestate.edu). I may be on skype from time to time (erin.craig22). I'm hoping this experience helps me distance myself from life at home for a while. I need it :)

I love you all and will write as soon as I can :) Wish me luck....there is no going back now!

XOXO,

Erin
